When you venture to achieve greatness by which the eyes of this realm have never seen, you have two options for swearing. If it’s the 1980s and you ride a dirt bike, you swear on your mother’s grave. Any other time, you swear by the beard of Zeus. There’s a reason for that.

So potent are the thunder god’s personal face clouds that they convince us of possibilities never before thought by man. Zeus’ beard may very well be responsible for Evel Knievel’s 19-car jump, bubbles in beer, Penicillin, Michael Jordan’s stomach-bug playoff game, Polish poster art, in-flight wireless internet and Granadian shawarma.

To this day we pay tribute to Zeus’ beard via a little exhibition of humankind’s greatest physical prowess… Olympic something something… some people still even watch the competition.

Topical, what with the Olympics looming. Oh, and the redux is a welcome change.

Not the absolute greatest song by The Beach Boys (but close), “I’m Waiting for the Day” is probably my favorite.

Fun facts: Brian Wilson did all the vocals for this one, Tony Asher had nothing to do with this one and Gary Coleman plays timpani and bongos on the track. But not that Gary Coleman.

Why Beard Revue?

Sometime in 2007 a friend asserted that most blogs only last three months. If they last longer than that, they are likely to stick around. But all the rest are just flashes in the pan.

Because I’m the kind of guy who takes statements like that as a challenge, I set out to find a topic on which to blog. The following major factors contributed to devising Beard Revue.

The web site for which I was reviewing music had shut down.
I love Pitchfork and their pretentious assumed authority on every thing music. It’s humorous and helpful.
I think beards are awesome. And funny.

So I started writing about beards and rating them on a scale from 0 to 10.0. Simple.

Then an audience grew. It grew so large that I became enthusiastic beyond prior estimation. Beard Revue averaged more than one post per day in the last four months of the first year. (Where did I find the time?)

Now over two years in, Beard Revue has lost focus. It does two things well:

Reviews beards.
Finds beard ephemera (art, mostly).

And with that in mind, it’s time to do that right. Tumblr seems like the right tool to achieve this (Blogger kinda sucks; Tumblr kinda rocks). So, allow me to introduce to you Beard Revue on Tumblr.

Right now I’m just adding the archives and posting a few new reviews as I go. The CSS is still not exactly what I want. But if you bear with me, I think you’ll like it a lot more than its previous incarnation (which still lives at beardrevue.blogspot.com). Updates will occur throughout February until this ship is right. In March, beardrevue.com will direct to the Tumblr.

Holy cow. Thank you for appreciating my appreciation. I received quite a few e-mails and and I just wanted reply in an anonymous way. I didn’t really intend the post as an attempt to get one of you for my own, but I was flattered by your invitations and interest in me. To be honest, I was a little tipsy when I posted and I was really just entertaining myself. So, a few specific things I wanted to say in response to your e-mails, hopefully you all know who you are…

- There’s no catch, I really do love good beer, good music, and good beards. My nose is a little crooked, but nobody seems to mind.
- If you’re gonna drink a crappy beer make it the High Life. It’s way more flavorful and there’s a classy lady sitting in the moon on the bottle. Also, it’s perfect with BBQ.
- For those of you who offered fatherly advice, thanks for calling me kid. I love that.
- If I inspired you to grow your beard, you’re welcome… and thank you.
- A quick note about unsolicited photos: I found that regardless of how attractive some of you are, all of the photos were a little creepy. (For future reference, perhaps.)

In conclusion, thanks again. My heart was warmed. Please continue to refrain from shaving :)

Dear Bearded Men of Cambridge and Somerville:

I see you. I see you at TOAD and Lizard Lounge listening to the good music. I see you at Whole Foods and Market Basket shopping to cook what I can only imagine is something comforting. I catch your eye on the T and I shyly smile at you when we pass each other on the street. I see you walking your dogs, but I don’t want to be that girl who uses a guy’s dog to get to him (although, like you, your dogs are very cute). I see you with your hipster girlfriends with their leggings and their PBR. I see you with your semi-serious collegiate girlfriends with their UGGS and their nonfat lattes. And with my 21-speed bike and normal-girl clothes I am intimidated by your understated, mysterious grace. Nevertheless, I see you and I appreciate you and I want you to know that should you ever choose to leave the PBR and UGGS behind, I’ll be here. I’ll be right here with an IPA and an unwavering reverence for how you’ve managed to take the beard from creepy to beautiful. Thank you.
